Work Of The Humane Society Of The United States.
Contrary to what many people might be thinking, the Humane Society of the United States does not only keep animals for people to come and adopt. HSUS’ work goes beyond supporting the local animal shelters in doing their work. Celebrating Animals, Confronting Cruelty is the motto of the organization and represents the complex work that is carried out by the organization.
Thousnds of species exist today in the world today. Part of the work that HSUS gets involved in is to protect, save, and rescue these animals. The organization works globally not just in the United States and has been involved in work to save animals found deep in the Ocean. Racing, rodeos, Zoos, circuses, hunting, fashion, aquariums and research are some of the activities that rescued animals have been involved in. The list is however long.
Another major work f the HSUS is to work with the pet owners at home and also providing support to various local animal shelters through the utilization of the various animal professionals which it has. The organization is also presenting pushing for pieces of legislation both locally and internationally. The laws that the organization has been lobbying are meant to ensure that animal cruelty has been eliminated. Animals are also victims when a disaster such as when the Tsunami hit the South East Asia in 2004. In order to rescue animals in disaster cases, the HSUS is always prepared with a team that can travel to the affected areas whether locally or internationally. The HSUS has programs that ensures that home owners are educated about the backyard animals such as squirrels.
In the united states, HSUS was not the first organization to be involved in animal welfare. The first organization to be founded was the society for the prevention of cruelty of animals and was founded in 1886. It was the first organization of its kind in the U.S. There are however many other organizations that came up. In a delegates meeting held by the various animal rights organizations in 1887, there was an agreement that all the organizations should be collapsed to for the American Humane Association. The disagreements among some members led to some of the leaving and forming HSUS.
The main aim of HSUS is to eradicate animal cruelty worldwide. Among the first pieces of legislation was the one to fight against mistreatment of animals used for research. Many laws in the U.S have passed. The laws range from those protecting endangered species to those that make it illegal to mistreat research animals inhumanly.
