Short Course on Dogs – What You Need To Know

How to Choose the Right Treats for Your Dog

Treats can be a great way to make your dog feel that he is loved. These yummies can be all kinds of foodies, from the scrap of leftover steak in your fridge to that sweet little doggy biscuit you bought at a pet bakery. The question is, how can you make sure that your dog is getting the right treats?

Dogs deserve a few treats once in a while. Treats can bring them good things actually. There are those that enhance canine dental health. They can also help motivate the dogs during training or when you just want to teach him good behavior.

While you’re giving treats to your dog, you feel good about each other and this contributes to strengthening that bond that you share between you.

The problem is that treats are not all created equal, and some can actually be harmful to your dog. If you’re not careful, you could be giving your pet something that is high in fat and/or sugar. As you may know, these two can cause weight gain, considering that it can be easy to lose track of how much you give your pet over an entire day. Almost 50% of pets in the United States are overweight, which makes them more likely to develop all sorts of health problems.

Depending on activity level, a 20-pound dog can only burn 700 calories daily. If you give your dog two or three 100-calorie biscuits a day, you can easily push him into overindulgence.

If your dog is already overweight or you’re trying to prevent him from being overweight, give those treats occasionally or give him only low-calorie treats. It’s also wise to be choosy about the brand of treats you give your dog. Betsy Farms, for example, has built a reputation for making nutritious and tasty dog treats, such as the immensely popular Betsy Farms chicken jerky.

In terms of table scraps, the problem is that they’re usually high in fats or sugar, causing stomach upset or ruining your dog’s appetite for healthy food. That’s why when the family’s eating, it’s always best to keep your pet away from the dining room.

So how do you choose the right treats for your dog?

First off, you’d like to choose treats that are made especially for dogs. For instance, Betsy Farms duck jerky dog treats are not only enjoyed by dogs but are healthy for them too.

Get treats with extra nutrients or dental benefits too. Or give your pet some carrots, broccoli and other low-calorie, high-fiber vegetable treats.

Keep in mind that there are some table foods – for example, chocolate, onions, raisins and grapes – that may be toxic to dogs. Finally, if you’re in doubt about giving your dog a certain type of food, ask your veterinarian for more info just to be sure. Or simply stick to established dog food brands, such as Betsy Farms.
